In their first game back after a three-year hiatus, the men’s soccer team, along with head coach Oliver Slawson clinched a 2-1 win in double over time over Daemen College, tallying their first ever victory as a team for Ashland.

With seven freshmen starting on the field, it was first year defender, John Duldner, who scored the winning goal after heading a corner kick from junior midfielder Malcolm Mohrmann.

His goal came in the 110th minute of the game, but the first goal for the Eagles came in the 80th when sophomore forward Thomas Cordeiro scored off an initial header.

Following the Eagle’s first goal, Daemen responded quickly with a goal of their own, eventually forcing the game into overtime.

Despite Daemen’s 20-18 advantage in shots, the Eagles took eight of the game’s ten corner kicks and senior goalkeeper Nick Ciraldo earned his first win stopping four shots.

With their first game under their belt, the squad, along with Slawson have a lot to learn and will continue to mold themselves into the team they aspire to become.

Up next, the team will host their home opener on Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. against Northern Michigan.
