Second half heroics give AU women’s soccer come from behind win

The lady Eagles (5-0-2, 2-0-0) pinned themselves into a corner against the Walsh Cavaliers (5-2-1, 1-1-0) as they found themselves down 0-2 in the first half only to charge back to win 3-2 Sunday at Ferguson Field.

The first half did not bode well for the Eagles as they struggled to develop any consistency in the middle, and all it took was two slight let ups in a short span to find themselves down two goals going into halftime.

After halftime a totally different Eagles team took the field with determination as they established themselves in the middle third of the field and found the offensive power that was absent during the majority of the first half.

The Eagles responded to Walsh’s early pair of goals as junior forward Morgan Bittengle found the back of the net quickly after the start of the second half to bring the ladies one goal down to the Cavaliers.

A couple minutes later fellow forward sophomore Deijah Swihart provided the equalizing goal to bring the Eagles level with their opponents.

The attitude of the Eagles had completely turned about face as the momentum shifted in favor of AU as they poured on the offensive pressure that they themselves had experienced from Walsh in the first half of the game.

Finally the moment that the Eagles were waiting for came as the go ahead goal came to the feet of freshman midfielder Emily Ledbetter giving her not only the game winning goal but her first collegiate goal in her career.

“I was not expecting it because I wasn’t playing very well in the first half. The second half we just came out after talking about it as a team. Coach was saying we can’t give up, it’s one half, and we have 45 more minutes to go out there and give it to them,” Ledbetter said. “Everyone else went in and we got two goals in.  I was just doing my job finally and was able to finish it.  I have been waiting for that goal.”

Coach Danny Krispinsky was proud of his team’s effort in the second half as they stepped up to the challenge of being two goals down.

“I’m extremely proud of them to show the fight and the confidence that they have to come back from two goals down which is really tough to do.  We switched our minds into going to attack mode which is something we needed to do from the beginning, but unfortunately it took us to conceding two goals to get into that mode.”

The Lady Eagles take to the road this Friday as they travel up north to fellow GLIAC opponent Ferris State.
