The Ashland University women’s soccer team has done the unthinkable and won back-to-back Great Midwest Athletic Conference titles. The Eagles, who clinched the No. 2 seed in the conference, downed the Walsh Cavaliers on Nov. 3 before heading up against the No. 1 seeded Cedarville Yellowjackets in the championship.

The Eagles took on the Yellowjackets earlier in the season, but unfortunately fell 2-1. However, on Nov. 5, they got their revenge.

In the first half of play, the Eagles struck quickly scoring the only goal in the contest.

In the 13th minute forward Merrik Mihalek cut inside the box with defenders closer her out well and drilled the ball into the top left corner. It was her first goal of the season, in one of the most important moments.

Cedarville’s goalkeeper, Brooke Ackley, could not get a fingertip on the shot.

The first half saw the Eagles continuously putting pressure on the Yellowjackets defense recording three shots and forcing three corner kicks.

Eagle goalkeeper Bri Rogers was barely pressured as she had just two shots against her and neither was on goal heading into halftime.

Coming out of halftime, the Yellowjackets ramped up the offensive production.

They recorded 11 shots, seven of which were on goal.

Rogers stepped up and took the game into her own hands as she recorded seven saves to go alongside her seventh clean sheet of the season.

The Eagles finished the contest with just four shots on the day showcasing their production over volume.

With the win, the Eagles repeated as Great Midwest Athletic Conference champions downing the same team they took on in last year’s title match.

The team now looks to NCAA Division II regional play which starts this coming week. Matchup days, times and opponents are yet to be determined.
