Eagles stunned again at Michigan Tech

The Ashland University football team lost 24-21 in its Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against Michigan Tech on Saturday afternoon after the Huskies scored on an 8-yard touchdown pass with 36 seconds left in the game.

AU (7-2, 5-2 GLIAC) uncharacteristically turned the ball over four times and scored its fewest point in a game since Nov. 8, 2014 (12 at Tech).

Junior tight end Adam Shaheen gave the Eagles a 7-3 lead after catching a 12-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Travis Tarnowski.

That was Shaheen’s 13th receiving score of the season, which sets a new program record.

He finished the day with four grabs for 26 yards.

The Huskies (3-5, 3-5 GLIAC) responded with a 64-yard touchdown pass on the ensuing possession to retake the lead, 10-7.

The score stayed the same until the fourth quarter, when Tarnowski hit sophomore wide receiver Matthew Wilcox for a 33-yard touchdown, giving the Eagles a 14-10 lead with 12:53 left in the game.

Wilcox caught three passes for 98 yards in the game.

AU forced a punt on Tech’s next drive, but junior cornerback Dale Irby fumbled the punt, giving the Huskies the ball back at the Ashland 33.

Following the turnover, Tech quarterback Brandon Cowie

threw a 21-yard touchdown pass on fourth-and-10, giving the Huskies a 17-14 lead midway through the fourth quarter.

The Eagles responded with a 91-yard touchdown drive that was capped by a 2-yard plunge by senior tailback Vance Settlemire.

Settlemire carried the ball 17 times for 84 yards and added six catches for 52 yards.

MT responded with an 8-yard touchdown pass with 36 seconds left in the game.

AU got the ball back one last time, but a Tarnowski interception sealed the Eagles fate.

Tarnowski finished the day 24 of 37 for 256 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions.

The Eagles were led defensively by a trio of seniors — linebacker Zach Olszewski (13 total tackles, tackle for loss, pass breakup); safety Terrell Hudson (10 tackles, interception); and linebacker Brandon Gency (10 tackles).

AU returns to Jack Miller Stadium/Martinelli Field against Walsh (1-8, 0-8) on Nov. 5 at 1 p.m. for Senior Day.
