Ashbrook hosts panel during first 2016 Presidential debate
October 6, 2016
Ashland University’s Ashbrook Center was featured on Cleveland 19 News after the first Presidential debate last Monday for a live post-debate discussion.
There were ten individuals who sat on the post-debate panel. Individuals ranging from AU’s president Carlos Campo, Ohio House of Representative 2nd District Representative Mark Romanchuk, and even AU students, among others all were all members of the panel.
“They [Channel 19 News] talked a lot to the Donald trump supports about how they [Trump supporters] felt about his performance, so it was definitely a shift in conversation after the debate,” AU student and panelist Rachael Wyant said. “Before the debate they just asked us who we were voting for or if we were undecided. They redid the poll at the end of the debate so that we could see if anything had shifted.”
Before the debate the members of the panel stated who they would be voting for, and on a white board the votes were tallied. During the debate the panel took notes and analyzed the debate, to see whether or not their vote would change in the post-debate discussion.
Before the debate Donald Trump had three votes, Hillary Clinton brought in the most at four votes, third party candidate Gary Johnson pulled in two votes, and one member of the panel was undecided.
The only change after the debate was Carlos Campo’s switch from voting for Trump to undecided, bringing Trumps number down to two, and the number of undecided votes up to two.
This is not the first time the Ashbrook Center at AU has interacted with Channel 19 News. In 2015 during the GOP debate, Channel 19 News watched the debate with a group from the Ashbrook Center.
