AU tennis team hosts doubles invitational
Eagles showcase young talent in the fall season
October 6, 2022
The Ashland University men’s and women’s tennis teams hosted a doubles invitational from Friday, Sep. 30 to Sunday, Oct. 2.
On the first day, the Eagles tennis team had countless victories with the women winning one match in Flight A, one match in Flight B, and both matches in Flight D.
“This was our first doubles invitational that we have hosted and it was a great experience,” said sophomore Claudia Adcock. “It was nice to have a ton of matches together to be able to practice as a doubles team against others. Teams better watch out for the spring!”
Flight D was held by freshman Alley Stoehr and sophomore Josie Gorges who performed well.
“Alley and I work really well together. It was hard at first to communicate with each other as it is with everyone that is new partners,” said Gorges. “But we know each other’s strengths and weaknesses after we practiced so much together.”
The men’s team on Friday saw freshman Gabriel Seminario and freshman Reid Opel winning their matches in Flight D.
“Since Gabe is a lefty and I am a righty, we both played our forehands on the outside of the court and hit a lot of good returns off the serve,” said Opel.
The Eagles continued to improve throughout the weekend with the women’s team winning matches in Flight B and Flight D.
“We were so proud of ourselves for winning because two weeks ago we could not have done that,” said Gorges.
Saturday and Sunday the men’s side saw victories in Flight A, Flight C, and Flight D.
“It felt good to have success after losing both of our doubles matches at the invitationals in West Virginia,” said Opel.
Both the women and men continue practicing for more doubles competitions that occur in the next few weeks.
The women’s team’s next match will be against Ohio Wesleyan on Oct. 9 at 1 p.m. while the men’s next matches will be at the Shawnee State invitationals on Oct. 14 and 15.
