After a 34-14 victory against the Quincy Hawks in Week Four, the Eagles return back to Jack Miller Stadium to take on the Northwood Timberwolves on Oct. 1.

With the season playing out well for the Eagles as they sit at 3-0, the Timberwolves will look to play spoilers to an undefeated season.

The two squads have a deep-rooted history with one another, but that took a break when Ashland left the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) for the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC).

In the last ten matchups, the Eagles have won nine of those dating all the way back to 2006.

The last time these two teams faced one another came back on Sep. 28, 2019, in which the Eagles won 31-28.

In that competition, starting running back Gei’Vonni Washington rushed 30 times for 130 yards and three touchdowns.

“I think he carried the ball 30-something times. He just cannot do that,” said Head Coach Lee Owens. “Fortunately, we now have the depth where he won’t have to do that.”

Now with juniors Larry Martin and Eli Potts, they can rest Washington and not lose a beat in the running attack.

Martin and Potts have combined for 352 rushing yards and three touchdowns through three games played.

Although these two squads may have a rich history Owens feels that in each game they go into they cannot underestimate their opponent.

“We talked about good football teams never play down. They always give their best ability,” said Owens. “We have to go out every day on the practice field and on the game field and prove ourselves. Being ranked No. 9 in the country puts an incentive on our back for people to look at.”

Like Owens mentioned the Eagles are now ranked No. 9 in the country according to the AFCA coaches poll after a dominating victory against the Quincy Hawks on the road.

In that contest, the defense shined shutting out the Hawks in the first half and just allowing 14 points in the second half. The defense also forced two interceptions.

The offense saw Washington rush for 90 yards and three touchdowns to help secure the victory. Offensive captain, quarterback Austin Brenner, also had a solid game as he recorded 199 yards and a touchdown.

The Timberwolves on the other hand are coming off a massive loss to Davenport University, 51-17. The halftime score favored Davenport as they led 37-3.

The Timberwolves committed four turnovers in the loss, something they will have to perfect going up against an Ashland defense that has given up just 31 points in three contests.

On the season they are currently 2-2 with a two-game losing streak.

These two squads look to take on one another at Jack Miller Stadium this Saturday, Oct. 1, with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
