The Ashland University swim team had their first home swim meet this past weekend and placed third.

The three schools that the Eagles competed against were the University of Findlay, Tiffin University, and Northern Michigan University.

There was a variety of different events and the Ashland Eagles ranked close to the front and in the middle of most of them.

Beginning with the men and women’s 200 freestyle relay, they both place second. The women’s team consisted of two juniors, Grace Reichard and Zoe Scarpone, Julia Grady, a sophomore and freshman Rebecca Prexta and they took second behind Findlay.

The men’s team took second behind Northern Michigan and the men’s team consisted of sophomore Ben Keilholz, senior John Scalli, another sophomore Keegan Goeke and freshman Josh Nixon.

There were some single events where the Eagles placed well. Sophomore Erin Staley and junior Ryan Deemer both took fifth in the 500 freestyle.

Junior, Zoe Scarpone took third and Chris Georgiadis took sixth in the 200 IM.

Lastly, sophomores, Grady finished sixth in women’s and Keilholz took fourth in the men’s 50 free.

The new head coach, Ron Allen was very impressed with the team with how well they handle themselves and the way they matched up with the other teams in the pool. Ashland has no divers so that puts them down in a significant amount of points from the beginning, so it can be very tough to come back from that.

However the Ashland Eagles did finish third behind Northern Michigan and Findlay.

Men’s 200 medley relay of Scalli, Daniel Callis, Charlie Sutton, and Keilholz took third.

Georgiadis took fifth in the men’s 400 IM.

Scarpone took second in the women’s and Sutton took third in the men’s 100 fly.

Reichard took fifth in the women’s and Deemer took second in the men’s 200 free.

Mens relay of Deemer, freshman Malcolm Doepke, Georgiadis, and Bernsdorf took fourth in the 800 free relay

“Although our team is small, we pride ourselves in our positive attitude and determination to never give up,”Zoe Scarpone said. “Our goal for this meet was to have fun and compare ourselves to where we were last season at this time. It is still early so there are a lot of improvements to be made. But the team is optimistic about our future and can’t wait to continue with our season.”

The Eagles will be back at it on Oct. 22 at 1 p.m. against Findlay.
