Cross Country competes at the GLIAC Championships

The Ashland Eagle’s cross country teams are getting close to wrapping up their season after competing at the 2016 GLIAC Championships on Oct. 22 at Ferris State University.
“We ran really well. We made some mistakes, just some mental errors. We went out a little too fast and it’s not quite our team’s fault,” cross country coach Thomas Scott said, “the whole field got out fast. I think we actually went out a little smarter than the rest of the field but we still weren’t our target paces.”
The men’s team placed fifth with 136 points, just barely behind Walsh who placed fourth with 122 points, while the women’s team placed tenth with 305 points.
Scott said, “they moved up really well compared to other schools but I think we could have moved up a little better if we were a bit more relaxed in the beginning of the race.”
Coming in first on the men’s side was senior Nick Hall earning himself sixth place overall. Hall also earned first-team All-GLIAC honors.
Behind Hall were sophomore Stephen Kapes, and seniors Aubrey Jordan, Zach Humrichouser, and Tommy Menyes.
“That fourth mile was really slow for everyone and i think if we would have gotten out a little smarter we would have been a little more even paced and ran a little bit better,” Scott said.
On the women’s side, Emily Schumaker once again came in first for the AU women’s team and earned 48th place.
Following Schumaker were seniors Linda Morales and Jackie Genetin, freshman Johannah Stefanek, and senior Cortney Haubert.
“Getting in a championship style meet like this was a great learning experience for our guys and girls going into Regionals.”
Scott has a lot of confidence in his athletes as they prepare to take on the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional meet on Nov. 5 at Southern Indiana.
“If we can get to Nationals then we can do really well, our region is so tough,” Scott said, “I believe we can do it, we just need to be smart and run our race.”
