The Happy Grape Wine Bar & Bistro review
October 6, 2016
Sometimes finding something to do in Ashland seems impossible.
But, two Collegian reporters, Connor Dunwoodie and Callan Pugh, determined to find fun in their senior year, are visiting local spots in Ashland and reviewing them, so you know exactly what to expect if you choose to visit.
This week, they decided to head on over to the Happy Grape Wine Bar and Bistro.
Callan: Since freshman year, I have been saying I wanted to go to the Happy Grape when I turned 21.
Turns out it wasn’t worth the wait because anyone at any age can go. It was such a classy place to visit. I would take my family when they visit but Connor and I both agreed that it also seemed like a nice place to take a first date. It was really relaxed and comfortable and though it was a bit pricier than other bars it definitely did not feel over-priced because the environment was so nice.
They also have a menu that feels really artisanal and that features local ingredients. I got a pumpkin chili that was like a bite of fall in every spoonful. I cannot wait to go back again.
Connor:
The Happy Grape is located right next to Bullshooters, making the Happy Grape one of the furthest bars/restaurants on East Main Street to still be considered “downtown”, but let me tell you, the distance is worth it. The Happy Grape is by far one of the classiest places in Ashland. Callan and I both thought that the Happy Grape is a great date location. They have so many different kinds of wines, drinks, and a very tasteful menu. The layout and atmosphere of the bistro make you feel like you’ve in a way left Ashland and are hanging out in a fancy downtown, the Happy Grape is a happy escape from the typical bar/restaurant atmosphere.
Service: 4.85/5
Callan:
You seat yourself, but from there, they take care of everything you need. We were served quickly and efficiently and the bartender was so friendly!
Connor:
I have been to the Happy Grape multiple times and I have never been disappointed by the service. Friendly people who are not pushy, yet super social and personable.
Cleanliness: 5/5
Callan:
The Happy Grape wins my seal of approval just for how clean it was. It was spotless.
Connor:
The Happy Grape is incredibly clean. Not only is the whole place super tidy, but the place is tastefully decorated. I’ve been to almost every restaurant/bar in Ashland, and I can say with confidence that the Happy Grape takes home the win with how clean it is.
Bathrooms: 4.5/5
Callan:
The bathroom was very clean and looked really nice. My only complaint is that there is only one bathroom so it could mean waiting time on a really busy evening.
Connor:
Just like everything else at the Happy Grape, the bathrooms are super clean and beautifully decorated. The restrooms even had some season decorations.
Affordability: 2.75/5
Callan:
I got chili and a beer (at a wine bar?! I know.) and my total bill was $9.00. It wasn’t ridiculously over priced but some menu items are definitely more expensive. This is a higher end restaurant and wine bar and the food was definitely good so I wasn’t upset by the price. However when my budget is a bit thin and I’m in search of a place to have fun this may not be my first pick.
Connor:
All the elegance comes at a (literal) price. The Happy Grape is definitely more pricey than most places in Ashland, but if you are willing to spend an extra couple dollars on drinks and food for the atmosphere and quality of drinks, the Happy Grape is for you.
Atmosphere: 4.75/5
Callan:
It was such a classy place. It felt like I was transported to some really cool place in the city instead of in Ashland.
Connor:
If you’re looking for the club or bar scene, do not attend the Happy Grape. If you are looking for a relaxed, classy, and clean place to spend your afternoon or evening, this is the place for you. The Happy Grape has the perfect layout and atmosphere for socializing and having a laid back night.
