AU Eagles blow out Oilers on the road
Eagle football team wins 28-3 against the Findlay Oilers in Week Two
September 10, 2022
The Eagles are the real deal, and today they proved just that.
Coming off of a Week One victory against the #10 nationally ranked Notre Dame Falcons, the Eagles headed into JC Donnell Memorial Stadium to take on the Findlay Oilers in what looked to be an exciting matchup.
While the Eagles definitely had themselves an exciting game, the Oilers struggled tremendously on both sides of the ball.
To start the game AU’s defense dominated, with safety Jourdan Swett intercepting quarterback Jeremy Hunt and returning it 55 yards to end Findlay’s opening drive. With Swett setting the offense up with good field position Eagle quarterback Austin Brenner finished the job with a 5-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Logan Bolin.
That would be Austin Brenner’s first touchdown pass since returning from a season-ending injury last year.
The Oilers drove back down the field and brought the game back within reach as kicker Austin Snyder drilled a long 42-yard field goal to make it a 7-3 game.
After watching Synder go down and drill a 42-yarder, Eagle kicker Storm Elsesser decided to one-up him, and with roughly nine minutes to play in the second quarter he loaded up his left foot and smashed a 45-yard field goal to put AU up 10-3.
Right before halftime commenced Brenner scrambled and rushed in an 18-yard touchdown to put the Eagles up 16-3 heading into halftime.
In the second half, freshman kicker A.J. Rhodes secured his first collegiate field goal from 26 yards out to put them up 19-3. After Rhodes’ field goal the next points on the board would be from junior running back Eli Potts who ran for 15 yards into the endzone.
Later on, Rhodes would connect on a 29-yard field goal with 64 seconds left in the game to secure a 28-3 victory against the Oilers.
Brenner threw for 196 yards and a touchdown on 24-32 passing. On the ground, he scored a touchdown and recorded 14 yards. Running backs Larry Martin and Eli Potts had 104 rushing yards combined on the ground while last week’s star Gei’vonni Washington recorded just 25 yards on 13 carries.
On the receiving end, Washington led the way with 63 yards. Wide receivers Malik Wooldridge and Logan Bolin caught four passes a piece combining for 72 yards and a touchdown.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Eagles held the Oilers to just 141 total yards while recording three sacks, eight first downs allowed, and three points through four quarters of action.
The Eagles improve to 2-0 on the season and start in-conference play 1-0. After a bye week, their next competition comes on the road against the Quincy University Hawks on Sept. 24th with kickoff set for 1 pm (2 pm local).
