The Ashland University women’s soccer (9-2-4, 6-2-2 GLIAC) returned from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula with a victory Friday against Michigan Tech (10-2-3, 6-2-2 GLIAC) and a tie Sunday against Northern Michigan (4-9-3, 3-4-3 GLIAC) leaving the Eagles tied for second in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Friday’s 2-0 victory against second place Michigan Tech gave the Eagles a much needed boost as the ladies rebounded from last week’s home loss against Northwood as sophomore forward Dejiah Swihart netted her eighth and ninth goal of the season surpassing her career high.

Junior forward Kelsey McKernan was credited with the assist for Swihart’s goal in the 24th minute giving her a team high four assists on the season.

The Eagles would shut the door on the Huskies as Swihart’s unassisted goal found the back of the net in the 89th minute.

After Friday’s victory the Eagles took sole possession of second place in the GLIAC as they traveled Marquette, Mich. to face Northern Michigan.

The matchup between AU and Northern Michigan resulted in a 0-0 tie as the Eagles could not capitalize after two overtime periods in a match where they were statistically the dominant team.

AU unloaded 24 shots on Northern Michigan as senior goalkeeper Alexandra Simmons stopped 13 shots to keep the Wildcats in the game.

Courtney Barker stopped four shots as the Eagles keeper walked away from the weekend trip with two shutouts bringing her season total to seven.

With the tie, AU finds themselves tied with Michigan Tech for second place in the GLIAC behind returning Division II national champions Grand Valley State.

The Eagles wrap up their regular season as they travel to take on GLIAC opponent Tiffin University Friday at 2 p.m.
