It was another big weekend for the Eagles women’s basketball team as they defeated Slippery Rock and Mercyhurst to improve to 6-0 on the season.

Ashland took on Slippery Rock in the opening game of the Holiday Inn Express Tournament on Saturday and came away with a 99-67 victory. 

It was another fast start for AU as they jumped out to a 9-0 lead right out of the gate and they never looked back. The Eagles held a 45-30 lead at halftime before running away with the game in the second half.

The Eagles once again exploded in the third quarter as they scored 32 points in the quarter. AU added 22 in the fourth as they cruised to their fifth victory on the season. 

Laina Snyder and Andi Daugherty paced they Eagles on offense as they had 19 points and 18 points respectively. 

Just over two minutes into the game, junior, Andi Daugherty scored her 1,000th point in her career. She is the 19th player in AU history to reach that mark and she joins Snyder as the second player to reach that mark this season.

Snyder added in 15 rebounds as well as she recorded yet another double-double.

Jodi Johnson was 7-7 from the free-throw line as she finished with 13 points and eight rebounds.

The Eagles got some help off the bench from Maddie Dackin, who had 12 points and three boards, and Renee Stimpert who had 10 points to go along with three steals.

On Sunday afternoon the Eagles took on the undefeated Mercyhurst Lakers. The Eagles overcame a slow start and pulled away from the Lakers late as they won, 85-59.

AU had a rough start as they trailed 19-15 at the end of the first quarter. They came out in the second quarter and turned things around as they went into the halftime break with a 41-29 lead.

Ashland came out on fire in the third quarter as they put the Lakers away with a 12-0 run to start the half.

Ashland added 19 points in the fourth as they came away with their sixth victory of the season.

Six players for the Eagles reached double digit point totals as they were led by Andi Daugherty and Jodi Johnson who had 13 points apiece.

Freshmen, Sara Loomis had 10 points and 10 rebounds off the bench after missing Saturday’s game. Dackin added 12 points off the bench for the second straight day as the Eagles continue to use their depth as one of their biggest weapons.

The Eagles were just 4-17 from downtown, but ended the game shooting 50% from the floor.

Ashland is second in the country in Division II in points per game as they are averaging 98 points per contest.

AU will move into conference play next weekend, as they will take on Lake Superior State and Northwood on the road in their first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game.
