Eagles headed to the semifinals

The Ashland University women’s volleyball team defeated the Wayne State Warriors in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinal Wednesday night.

The first set brought an explosive start from Shelby Woycik and Reanne Neal. The Eagles finished the first set on top 25-11.

The second set brought a tougher fight from the Warriors coming within five points of the Eagles before they took a 25-19 lead to take the set.

In the third set, the Warriors changed their plan of attack and won the third set 25-19. The fourth set also brought a close fight between the Warriors and the Eagles that ended in the Warriors taking the set 25-18, tieing the score at 2-2.

In the deciding fifth set, the Eagles trailed behind by two points to come from behind and score five consecutive points and ran with their lead for the rest of the set. The Eagles come from behind to take the set 15-11 and win 3-2.

Sophomore Kayla Pfeiffer recorded 29 assists and 16 digs while Shelby Woycik had 12 kills. Senior Alli Cudworth also added 13 kills and 14 digs for a double-double. Fellow senior, Casey Clark ended the game with 19 kills, seven digs, and five block assists.

 Wayne St. recorded a .117 hitting percentage against Ashland’s .217 percent.

The Eagles move to 22-9 overall and 11-0 in home games this season to keep their undefeated home record.  

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday in the GLIAC semifinal game against No. 7 seed Lake Erie at Ferris State.
