The Ashland University football team has concluded its 2022-2023 season with a 10-2 record, a conference championship, their star linebacker declaring for the NFL Draft, the retirement of Head Coach Lee Owens and countless awards and honors. Now, roughly a month removed since they last competed in a contest, the awards continue to roll through.

On Tuesday, Dec. 20, senior offensive tackle Gavin Posey brought in his third All-Academic American honor which is the third time an Eagle has done so since the 1966-1967 season.

Those three athletes have been women’s basketball star Andi Daugherty, Team USA gold medalist Trevor Bassitt and now Posey. By joining this elite company, Posey became the first Eagle football team member to receive the honor three times.

His All-American Academic status was awarded with a placement on the first team, while on the opposite side of the ball his teammate and defensive tackle Nick Cone was placed on the second team.

With Cone and Posey being placed on the All-American Academic teams, the program total is now over 20 with a total of 22 being awarded for their efforts academically.

While Posey may not be able to show many statistics while being an offensive tackle, his help aided the Eagle offense to over 2400 rushing yards and 2200 passing yards.

On the other side, the Eagle defense was ranked as one of the best in Division II and Cone provided 33 tackles, six tackles for a loss, four sacks, three pass breakups and one interception.

As the awards piled in and the season came to a close, the Eagles made their mark on the GMAC and Division II this season both on the field and in the classroom.
